Safe Patient Care Act

The data presented shows the varying number of nurses working in a mixed ward, catering to medical, palliative care, rehabilitation, geriatric evaluation, and aged care patients. These different functions require specific nurse-to-patient ratios as mandated by the Safe Patient Care Act to ensure optimal care for patients and support for staff.

Korumburra Campus

The Multi Function Ward/Alchera is a 35-bed mixed ward at the Korumburra Campus, consisting of 15 acute and palliative care beds and a 20-bed High Level Residential Aged Care Facility.

In compliance with the Safe Patient Care Amendment Act 2019 Nurses are rostered in the Multifunction Ward and Alchera according to the following ratios under a level 4 hospital

Acute

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 nurse – 6 patients + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm)

1 nurse – 7 patients + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 nurse – 10 patients

The expected number of occupied acute beds is up to 6

Palliative Care

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 nurse – 6 patients + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm)

1 nurse – 7 patients + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 nurse – 10 patients

The expected number of occupied palliative care beds is up to 2

Aged Care

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 nurse – 6 residents + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm

1 nurse – 7 residents + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 nurse – 15 residents

The expected number of occupied residential beds is 20

Leongatha Hospital

The General Ward at Leongatha Hospital consists of 21 mixed beds, including maternity services, medical, surgical, and palliative care beds.

In compliance with the Safe Patient Care Amendment Act 2019 Nurses are rostered according to the following ratios under a level 4 hospital

Acute

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 nurse – 6 patients + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm)

1 nurse – 7 patients + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 nurse – 10 patients

The expected number of occupied acute beds is up to 12

Palliative Care

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 nurse – 4 patients + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm)

1 nurse – 4 patients + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 nurse – 6 patients

The expected number of occupied palliative care beds is up to 2

Maternity Services

AM (7am - 3.30pm)

1 midwife – 4 patients + nurse in charge

PM (1.30 - 10pm)

1 midwife – 4 patients + nurse in charge

ND (9pm - 7.30am)

1 midwife – 6 patients

The expected number of occupied antenatal/postnatal beds is up to 3
