About Gippsland Southern Health Service (GSHS)
Located across 2 campuses at Korumburra and Leongatha, Gippsland Southern Health Service provides a range of public health services across the entire lifetime, from maternity through to aged care, to the community of South Gippsland.
Our maternity service is Located within the General Ward at Leongatha Hospital and facilitates roughly 200 births per year. We currently have 6 GP obstetricians who work alongside our midwives to provide quality antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to our women. Our facilities include a midwife-led antenatal clinic, 2 birthing suites, spacious postnatal rooms, and quality extended postnatal care. We have access to theatre and are able to provide both elective and emergency caesareans when clinically indicated.
The General Ward provides care to a variety of medical and surgical patients, also accepting emergency admissions through our Urgent Care clinic which is staffed 24 hours. Additional services provided through Leongatha Hospital include Chemotherapy, Allied health services, Palliative care and Drug and Alcohol programs.
Working in a rural setting will give you exposure to wide variety of nursing experiences and enable you to develop your clinical skills across the healthcare setting, from urgent care to theatre to maternity.

Leongatha is a town with a population of approximately 5,500 located in the heart of South Gippsland and is just under a 2 hour drive from the Melbourne CBD. With easy access to beautiful beaches including Inverloch and Waratah Bay, and the rugged beauty of Wilson’s Prom, Leongatha is great place to explore from. Options for quality education abound, with multiple non-government primary and secondary schools to choose from, in addition to the Education Precinct which houses the local primary and secondary schools, as well as the South Gippsland Special School and Tafe Gippsland.
The surrounding South Gippsland towns provide an additional array of varied dining and shopping options, including café, breweries, vineyards and restaurants as well as local farmers markets nearly every weekend of the year.

Our Graduate Program
Gippsland Southern Health Service’s combined graduate midwifery/nursing program aims to assist you to develop the critical thinking, time management and practical skills required to consolidate your practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife, within a positive and supportive team environment.
We are committed to supporting and developing our nursing and midwifery workforce, and seek to retain our graduates for ongoing employment at the successful completion of their graduate year. We offer numerous opportunities for professional development and career advancement.
Duration:
The graduate year is a 52-week contract.
Hours:
0.8 EFT
Commencing:
7th February 2022
Rotations
-
4 month maternity rotation - including birth suite, antenatal outpatient presentations, postnatal with 2 weeks supernumerary at the commencement of this rotation.

4 month nursing rotation - General Ward at Leongatha Hospital.

4 month combined nursing/midwifery rotation in which you will work both nursing and midwifery roles as both primary and secondary midwife.

Experienced and approachable nurse/midwives on the ward to guide and support in the clinical setting on a day to day basis

Monthly graduate meetings to catch up and debrief
Study Days

4 allocated professional development days

Including Care of the Deteriorating Patient, Fetal Education Surveillance Program (FSEP), PROMPT (including neonatal Resus) and Preceptoring and Assessing.

Further opportunities to attend additional regional education days on your own time
Criteria for Successful Completion

Successful completion of graduate clinical competencies

Satisfactory clinical appraisals and completion of each rotation

Development and delivery of a presentation of a topic of interest to your colleagues as part of your ongoing professional development requirements.
